Will I feel pain after eyelid repair surgery?

We don’t expect patients to feel much pain after the surgery.

During the eyelid repair surgery, you will be placed under local or general anesthesia, so you will not feel any pain or discomfort. After surgery, you may experience tight and sore eyelids with watery, dry, sticky, itchy, or sensitive to light eyes.

Consult with your doctor about the postoperative symptoms

Being part of the healing process, you may experience the following symptoms for a couple of days after the surgery:

  • blurry vision for a few days
  • bruising, puffiness or fullness around the eyes
  • mild to moderate incisional pain or discomfort
  • headache

The symptoms will improve as soon as the sutures are removed in 3-6 days after the procedure. Usually, pain is controlled well with pain medications prescribed by your doctor. It is important to use ice compresses the first few days after surgery, this will help control the pain and reduce the swelling.

Seek immediate medical care if:

  • the pain does not get better after taking pain medication
  • if you experience increased pain, swelling, redness or warmth
