Cedars Sinai Marina del Rey Hospital Alert: COVID-19 (CORONAVIRUS) information for patients and visitors LEARN MORE >>

What happens on the day of the head and neck surgery?

You will need to arrive at the hospital for about 2 hours before your surgery starts.

It is unnecessary for friends or family members to stay at the hospital on the day of the head and neck surgery. The procedure is long, lasting sometimes eight to twelve hours. As soon as the surgery is over, family members will be notified. It is also good to know that it is not uncommon for patients to be kept asleep and on a breathing machine for the first night after the surgery.

Steps patients should follow on the day of the surgery

  • take a shower on the day or night before your surgery and wear clean clothes to minimize the risk of surgical site infections
  • avoid any perfumes or deodorants
  • do not wear make-up and remove your nail polish
  • if you have false nails at least one fingernail should be exposed
  • you can eat 6 hours prior to the surgery and drink clear fluids 3 hours before
  • avoid chewing gum and hard candy
