Who are the best candidates for facial reconstruction surgery?

Patients who suffer from facial skin cancer, patients with face injuries or birth defects, are the usual candidates for this procedure.

The best candidates for facial reconstruction surgery are people with damaged or asymmetrical face, which may be a result of the conditions:

  • Facial trauma: Any accident or injury to the face can distort the features and impede function, for instance, a broken nose from a car accident. Injuries may cause massive scarring that can be resolved through facial reconstruction surgery.
  • Disease: Patients with larger skin cancers on their face including areas such as the lips, nose, ears, and eyelids may require facial reconstruction using skin grafts to get rid of scars.
  • Congenital defects: Correction of the skin or the underlying bone deformities, for instance, cleft lip and cleft palate repair may require a reconstruction surgery.
