There is a saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. However, for one lucky Los Angeles resident, her “picture” is worth a life-saving transformation, and it only took 500 words.

Marina Weight Loss at Marina Del Rey Hospital is proud to announce that Theresa Nelson is the winner of its Weight-Loss Transformation contest. She will receive a free LAP-BAND surgery and lifetime postoperative care.

Contest Details

The Weight-Loss Transformation contest took place from April 4-30, 2011. Prospective patients were asked to submit a compelling 500 word essay that explained why they should be chosen to receive a free weight-loss surgery. A select panel consisting of Marina Weight Loss at Marina Del Rey Hospital health care professionals read each submission before selecting the winner.

“Today, more than 30% of California residents are classified as obese and are medically qualified for bariatric surgery. However, the economic downturn combined with the challenge in obtaining insurance approval is preventing many eligible Southern California residents from receiving this highly effective therapy,” said Dr. Jeremy Korman, Medical Director of Marina Weight Loss at Marina Del Rey Hospital. “We are fortunate enough to give Theresa this unique opportunity to change her life forever, and we are excited and privileged to be a part of it.”

Since the birth of her three children, Theresa has struggled with obesity and its health-related challenges. She is currently on medication for Type II diabetes and high blood pressure. Theresa considered bariatric surgery for several years but struggled with insurance approval. She went back to dieting, but the results were short-lived. On her way to work one day, Theresa heard a radio commercial for Marina Del Rey Hospital’s Weight-Loss Transformation contest, and she applied the very same day. On May 20, Theresa received a phone call informing her that she was selected as the winner. She will undergo a complete medical screening at Marina Del Rey Hospital to determine her eligibility for surgery as well as meet with a psychologist, physical therapist, and dietitian to ensure she is physically and mentally prepared to make the lifestyle changes associated with weight-loss surgery.

“As a single parent, I want to be the best mother I can be to my three sons. Sometimes when we are out, I can’t fully participate in all their activities because I get tired so easily. My sons have never seen me skinny. This is what I am looking forward to the most – being at a healthy weight for my sons.”

Theresa knows the surgery will require sacrifice, but she is looking forward to the challenge. “I’m ready to change my life and do what I have to do because the end result will be worth it,” she said.
