In its continued efforts to help Southern California residents fight obesity, Marina Weight Loss at Marina Del Rey Hospital is offering one qualified and deserving candidate a unique chance to change his or her life forever by receiving free weight-loss surgery and lifetime postoperative care as part of its Weight-Loss Transformation contest.

The Contest Takes Place from April 4-24, 2011

Prospective patients are asked to submit a compelling 500 word essay that explains why they should be chosen to receive a free weight-loss surgery. A select panel consisting of Marina Weight Loss at Marina Del Rey Hospital health care professionals will read and select the most compelling submissions. Ten finalists will be brought in for free health evaluations to confirm their medical conditions and suitability for surgery. The winner will be selected from these finalists and announced on May 14th.

Spearheaded by its Medical Director Jeremy Korman, M.D., F.A.C.S., Marina Weight Loss at Marina Del Rey Hospital is certified by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery as a “Center of Excellence.” Dr. Korman is a leading expert in the field of bariatricmedicine and he has performed more than 1,000 procedures on patients throughout the country. He is a board certified general surgeon specializing in performing laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery, adjustable gastric banding for adults and teenagers, and revision surgery, which includes state of the art endoluminal surgery, or incision-less gastric surgery.

Obesity has been recognized as an epidemic national health issue that cannot be solved with diet and exercise alone. In fact, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) has concluded that weight loss surgery may be the only effective, long-term weight loss therapy for those with a BMI over 35. Still, many do not select this effective therapy because of cost.

“Today, more than 30% of California residents are classified as obese and are medically qualified for bariatric surgery. However, the economic downturn combined with the challenge in obtaining insurance approval is preventing many eligible Southern California residents from receiving this highly effective therapy,” said Dr. Korman. “Our contest is designed to give one lucky winner a chance to change his or her life forever, and we are excited and privileged to be a part of it.”
