Shaun Cody Undergoes Surgery at Marina Del Rey Hospital

When a herniated disc in his lower spine put nose tackle Shaun Cody on the sidelines, it was Dr. Robert Watkins at the Marina Del Rey Hospital spine center who patched him up.

Cody, a Whittier native and USC alumnus, injured his back playing for the Houston Texans in the 2012 preseason. He played through the pain, but when he also sustained broken ribs and a punctured lung, he needed to recover. That meant back surgery.

Dr. Watkins performed a microscopic lumbar discectomy on Cody in late January 2013. That means that part of the disc was removed in order to relieve pressure on the spine. The operation was successful, Dr. Watkins said after the surgery.

A regular starter for Houston in the seasons prior to his operation, Cody was a free agent as of December 2013. His contract with Houston expired in March.
