Marina Weight Loss Applauds Patient Success Stories at 11th Annual Celebration

Twenty six patients joined Cedars-Sinai Marina del Rey Hospital's weight-loss staff at a celebration luncheon held February 28, 2014 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Marina del Rey to commemorate their ongoing success in weight loss and better health.

Every year, staff and patients at Marina Weight Loss, the weight loss surgery program at Cedars-Sinai Marina del Rey Hospital, partake in a patient celebration special luncheon to celebrate patients' continued weight-loss success. Each of the attending patients has undergone one of the surgical weight loss procedures offered at the hospital, including gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding, and sleeve gastrectomy. Attendees who have achieved success in weight loss and met their goals are recognized in a pin and rose ceremony, and this was the eleventh annual such celebration.

"It keeps me going," said Dr. Jeremy Korman, the medical director and chief surgeon of Marina Weight Loss. "I get to know my patients, and I care about them, so it's incredibly fulfilling to see that they're still benefiting from a decision they made to trust me a decade ago. Health is a gift, and so is being lucky enough to be able to help other people reclaim their health. I'm happy to share these positive experiences with my patients and staff."

This year's patient attendees boast a whopping 1,562 pounds of weight loss between them. Combined, they have lost nearly the equivalent of a VW Beetle. But they have gained so much more: fitness, improved health, satisfaction, and a feeling of accomplishment.

Story after story followed the same thread: after a life of obesity, weight loss surgery provided the foundation for improved focus and motivation, hard work, better health, and lasting success.

In total, 13 patients received a pin and a rose from Dr. Korman. Patients who had surgery as far back as 2003 and 2004 were recognized for maintaining their weight loss.

One patient, Bill Lahs, traveled all the way from Maryland to attend the celebration. Mr. Lahs, the biggest loser in the crowd, gave his personalized license plate to Dr. Korman before he moved to the east coast. Dr. Korman proudly displays this token of appreciation in his office. It reads "HAFDMAN" — half the man.

As they told their stories, the patients defined success in various ways — obstacles overcome, milestones reached, new passions found, old habits beaten.

  • Stephen was on oxygen prior to surgery; now, he has no obesity-linked health problems.
  • Anthony celebrated his birthday and a total of 158 pounds of weight loss at the event. When he accepted his pin and rose, unlike before surgery, he did not have to use a cane.
  • Christina lost 98 pounds, which allowed her the energy to keep up with her children.
  • Scott is more active than ever, taking a daily swim.
  • Ken participates in marathons for fun.
  • Norma can now take her children to the amusement parks and enjoy the rides.
  • Sylvia enjoys hiking. Delana enjoys swimming.
  • Toni now offers encouragement and support to many of our patients.
