Will I need transfusions during revascularization?
The need for blood transfusion depends on the type of intervention. Your surgeon will always inform you in advance if a blood transfusion might be necessary and help you prepare accordingly.
Revascularization surgery is one of the cardiac surgery procedures that might need a blood transfusion. Red blood cell transfusions given during or after the procedure are essential to save the lives of patients who require a large quantity of blood to address the severe blood loss due to surgery.
Sometimes, it may not be possible to precisely tell how necessary the transfusion is until the surgery takes place. Therefore, you will be advised to bank your blood to be used if the need for transfusion arises during or after the surgery. You will have sufficient time to bank your own blood before the surgical procedure unless your surgery is an emergency procedure.
