Who qualifies for the STARR treatment?

A weight loss specialist will determine if you are a suitable candidate for this procedure after examining you.

Just like any other medical intervention, the STARR treatment is only available for certain patients.

Your doctor will determine if you are a good candidate for the STARR treatment after performing a thorough medical investigation. Patients who normally qualify for this procedure, or other bariatric surgeries, have a BMI of 30/35 or higher.

Your body mass index (BMI) is a numerical value of your weight in connection to your height; it estimates body fat and defines morbid obesity at a score of 40 or more.

Eligibility criteria for the STARR treatment

Aside from the BMI score, other conditions for undergoing bariatric surgery include:

  • age between 18 and 70 (with some exceptions)
  • obesity-related complications (diabetes, heart disease)
  • high blood pressure and cholesterol
  • severe sleep apnea
  • asthma
  • joint pain
  • having attempted weight loss in the past through other unsuccessful methods

To diagnose obesity, your doctor will typically perform a physical exam and recommend some tests, including psychological consultation, as part of the pre-operative evaluation process. Depending on your overall health condition and risk factors, they will help determine any potential risk factors and the optimal weight loss treatment method.

A long-term rewarding outcome requires significant lifestyle changes based on the motivation of every patient.
