Skull base surgery is a minimally invasive procedure during which benign or malign tumors situated on the underside of the brain, the base of the skull or the upper vertebrae are removed.
It can also be employed to treat congenital anomalies and malformations. Surgeons use special instruments to access the inside of the skull through the mouth, nose or through incisions above the eyes or behind the ear.
It differs from a craniotomy, during which the entire skull has to be opened to gain access to the problematic area. The procedure involves significantly lower risks and entails a faster recovery.
