When should I consider neck surgery?
Neck surgery is rarely the most suitable option for neck pain, however, there are times when surgery is the only option for treating the condition that is causing the pain.
Neck surgery is generally performed for one of these reasons:
- to relieve pain caused by a nerve root that's being pinched by bone spurs or material from a ruptured or herniated disk, a condition called cervical radiculopathy,
- to remove pressure on the spinal cord caused by bone spurs, a condition known as spinal stenosis,
- and to keep vertebrae from griding together, which may be caused by a degenerative disk disease and can cause neck pain.
