What is pulmonology?

Pulmonology is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases, including pulmonary fibrosis, emphysema, asthma, and lung cancer.

Over 65 million people struggle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease worldwide, which makes it the leading cause of death. However, there is a wide range of lung diseases, both malignant and non-malignant. Some of the most common are emphysema, asthma, chronic bronchitis, pulmonary fibrosis, and lung cancer.

Pulmonology is a branch of medicine, which focuses on diagnosing and treating lung diseases, regardless of their type. As a pulmonologist, one conducts tests and exams to assess the health of the lungs in terms of function and breathing capacity. If a disease is found to occur, they prescribe treatment for it, which may include medication or even surgery.
