What is a bunion? Does it require treatment?
The bony prominence formed along the side of the big toe is called a bunion. Abnormal tendon or muscle balance in the foot causes it and if pain is felt because of it treatment is required.
If the shoes apply pressure on the bunion pain might be felt. Moreover, the pressure can irritate the nerve on the side of the foot.
With increased pressure bursa may develop, which is a fluid-filled sac, causing swelling and pain. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and orthotic devices may alleviate the pain. Getting rid of the deformity requires surgical treatment.
