What do I need to do prior to the bladder augmentation procedure?

You will need to undergo a series of tests before the bladder augmentation procedure. In addition, your doctor will provide you with instructions about the dietary habits and medications you need to take before the procedure.

The tests and examinations performed before the bladder augmentation procedure include:

  • Physical examination
  • Bladder examination (cystoscopy or radiological imaging)
  • Voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) test: This test assesses the bladder contour and ureteral reflux.
  • Cystometrogram (CMG): This test helps to measure the level of pressure at which the urine leakage happens.

Your doctor will provide instructions regarding the medications you will be allowed to take before the procedure. Before coming to the hospital, you will be on a low fiber diet and a bowel cleanse program might also be recommended. At the hospital, a strong laxative will be given prior to surgery for bowel preparation.
