Cedars Sinai Marina del Rey Hospital Alert: COVID-19 (CORONAVIRUS) information for patients and visitors LEARN MORE >>

What do I have to do before the spinal fusion surgery?

Your doctor will tell you what you should do in order to be fully prepared for this surgery and for your postoperative recovery.

First, your doctor will want to make sure you understand all the risks and benefits this procedure entails. Therefore, you will have a detailed discussion before you decide to undergo lumbar and lumbosacral fusion of the posterior column. A complete physical examination will be required so that the doctor can understand if you are eligible for the procedure.

You will be instructed on what to do prior to the surgery, for example, what medications you should stop taking and when you should stop eating or drinking before the day of the surgery.

Based on how soon you are expected to leave the hospital, your doctor will also provide you and your family with the necessary aftercare guidelines.
