What are the risks associated with the elbow replacement procedure?

Most risks involved in this procedure are associated with the anesthesia, such as allergic reactions and breathing problems. There are also bleeding and blood clots risk, as with any other surgery.

Here are some of the most common complications that can occur during and after elbow replacement surgery:

  • Infections
  • Damaged nerves and blood vessels
  • Allergic reaction to the artificial joint 
  • Broken bone
  • Stiffness or instability of the joint
  • Inefficiency of the artificial joint caused by loosening and wearing  
  • Tendon failure in the arm
  • Pain
