What are the possible complications that can occur during spine reconstruction?

Some complications associated with this procedure are minor and they can be easily treated. Other more significant complications are luckily very rare but still need to be mentioned.

Common minor complications that may occur after spinal reconstruction:

  • muscle soreness/pressure areas from positioning in surgery
  • superficial wound infection, bladder infection
  • excessive pain controlled with pain medication
  • constipation
  • a blood clot in your leg.

Some of the major risks of spine surgery include:

  • a neurologic deficit, up to and including paralysis
  • pulmonary embolism
  • major medical problems such as stroke, heart attack, and even death.
