What activities are recommended after the nephroureterectomy surgery?

It’s recommended to walk several times a day after your discharge. Normally, patients are able to walk as much as 6 times a day on level surfaces following this intervention. It is actually recommended to walk as often as you can after nephroureterectomy because sitting or lying for long periods might increase the chance of developing complications.

Everyone recovers at a different speed, and there is always the potential for complications. Your surgeon may be the only person who is aware of all the factors that could potentially impact your recovery.

After the nephroureterectomy surgery, build up your activities gradually over time, and be sure to take regular breaks when you feel tired. Some suggestions are included in the recovery tracker are:

  • Take all medicines as directed
  • Care for your surgical wound and catheter as instructed
  • Walking as an exercise is possible and highly encouraged after surgery
  • A healthy and balanced diet can help you get all the nutrients needed to heal

Thanks to improved technology and surgical skills, this procedure can now be performed via laparoscopy and sometimes using the da Vinci robot. The advantage of these new techniques is much smaller incisions resulting in significantly less pain, less blood loss, less scarring, shorter recovery time, and a faster return to daily activities.
