Is it risky to have home hemodialysis?

There are some risks and some benefits of having home dialysis. Your doctor will tell you all the pros and cons that you should be aware of before deciding to do hemodialysis at home.

Essentially, the procedure involves the same risks as hospital-conducted hemodialysis:

  • infection risks
  • low blood pressure
  • blood loss

Your doctor will tell you how many sessions you should have each week. The biggest advantage of home hemodialysis is flexibility; you can choose the schedule these sessions based on your needs. On the other hand, hospital hemodialysis ensures you have the necessary support right there and then in case something goes wrong during or after the session.
