If bladder cancer spreads, where does it go?

It is unusual for bladder cancer to spread to other parts of the body.

When bladder cancer does spread, it is called metastatic bladder cancer and it can spread in two different ways.

Bladder cancer local spread

  • to the lymph nodes
  • to the pelvic area
  • to other close-by organs, namely the prostate or uterus.

Secondary cancer or metastasis

Cancer that has spread to a distant part of the body is called secondary cancer or metastasis. If bladder cancer does spread, it will most likely spread to:

  • lungs
  • liver
  • bones.
