How should I prepare for the head and neck surgery?

Maintaining a healthy diet and avoiding gaining or losing weight is the most important thing that you can do before this surgery.

There are some instructions, patients should respect carefully for the better outcome of the procedure and for fast recovery. There are several instructions for the few days before the head and neck surgery and others for the day and the night before the procedure.

Instructions for the days before surgery

  • Try to stop smoking before surgery. Smoking will make it difficult for you to clear your secretions post-surgery and may affect your recovery.
  • Limit the consumption of alcohol prior to surgery.
  • Try to eat and sleep well.
  • Ask for support and help if you need.

The instructions for the night before surgery

  • do not eat anything after midnight (including mints, gum, hard candy)
  • do not drink anything after midnight (including coffee, tea, water)
  • do not smoke anything (cigars, cigarettes, E-cigs)

It is essential to respect these instructions to prevent vomiting and breathing of the vomitus into the lung during surgery, that can be dangerous or even fatal.

The instructions for the day of surgery

If you have prescribed maintenance medications for heart, blood pressure, asthma, diabetes or for other serious problems, ask the pre-operative nurses when to take them.

  • Brush your teeth but do not swallow toothpaste or water and shower with antibacterial soap.
  • Do not wear perfume, deodorant, nail polish or makeup.
  • Do not wear jewelry, watches or piercing.
  • Do not wear contact lenses.
