How long does it take to recover from neck surgery?

Hospital stays after the procedure will vary based on each patient’s physical condition.

Usually, the type of neck surgery you have undergone determines the duration of hospital stay as well as the level of assistance you will need shortly following the surgery. You will likely be able to move about in a few hours after the neck surgery. Most neck surgical procedures need only 1-2 nights of stay at the hospital. Your neck may be painful, which will ease with time. A cervical collar that supports your neck may be recommended for the first 4-6 weeks.

There are several factors that affect the time taken for recovery from neck surgery, which include:

  • Age: Younger people are likely to recover faster than people of older age.
  • Overall health: Your recovery might take a longer time if you have a pre-existing chronic illness. Smoking, excessive consumption of alcohol and being overweight can have a negative impact on wound healing and recovery.
  • Lifestyle: People who engage in regular physical activity and lead an active lifestyle tend to recover fast.
