How can you prevent cleft lip and palate?

Eat properly and take prenatal vitamins before and during pregnancy.

You cannot prevent always cleft lip and palate. However, there are things you can do to reduce your baby’s chances of having these defects. Get a preconception checkup to make sure that you are in proper health condition before getting pregnant and get early, regular, and prenatal care.

  • follow a healthy diet plan,
  • take carefully selected dietary supplements,
  • vitamins and minerals,
  • adopt a healthy lifestyle without smoking, alcohol consumption,
  • consult with your healthcare provider before taking any medication,
  • make sure any medicine you take is safe during pregnancy.

Take folic acid supplements as instructed by your doctor. Reduce the risks of infections during pregnancy. Some infections can increase the risk that the fetus will develop cleft lip or cleft palate.
