How can I keep pain under control after I get home?

Pain and discomfort are normal following spine surgery, regardless of the type of procedure you have. You will be informed about the steps you need to take and the specific requirements of your recovery before you leave the hospital. After surgery, you will find yourself to be very tired and you will most likely be using pain medications on a routine basis.

After surgery, pain is managed with narcotic medication, which you will be using for a limited period (4 to 8 weeks), as it can cause addiction. Keep in mind that their regular use may cause constipation, so drink lots of water and eat high fiber foods. You can purchase stool softeners (e.g., Colace, Docusate) and laxatives (e.g., Dulcolax, Senokot, Milk of Magnesia) without a prescription if you require them.
