Are diet changes necessary after suprapubic cystostomy?

After the intervention, it is important to have a healthy and balanced diet and an adequate daily fluid intake.

After suprapubic cystostomy, it is essential not to become constipated. Fibers, found in vegetables, fruits, beans, and whole grains, promote digestion and decrease the chances of constipation, which may block the catheter and increase the pressure inside the bladder, causing urine to leak. Consider asking your doctor for ways to prevent and treat constipation.

Follow your doctor’s recommendations and avoid the factors that can impair the result of the procedure.

  • Make sure you have an adequate daily fluid intake from 2 to 3 l, to encourage drainage and prevent urinary infections
  • Avoid bladder-irritating drinks like alcohol, coffee, tea, and fizzy beverages, drink water, milk, and fresh juices, and include soup in your daily diet
  • In order to avoid constipation and help maintain regular bowel movements, include foods with a high content of fibers in your diet, such as fresh vegetables and whole-grain bread
  • In order to prevent urinary infections and encourage drainage, you should drink lots of fluids (about 2 liters daily), water and fruit juice is fine, especially cranberry juice as this can help prevent bladder infections
