Are diet changes necessary after suprapubic cystostomy?

After the intervention, it is important to have a healthy and balanced diet and an adequate daily fluid intake.

After suprapubic cystostomy make sure you have an adequate daily fluid intake from 2 to 3 l, to encourage drainage and prevent urinary infections. Avoid bladder-irritating drinks like alcohol, coffee, tea, and fizzy beverages, drink water, milk and fresh juices and include soup in your daily diet.

The importance of a healthy diet

It’s essential to avoid constipation after suprapubic cystostomy because it can block the catheter and increase the pressure on the bladder. In order to avoid constipation, include foods with a high content of fibers in your diet, such as:

  • fresh fruits
  • fresh vegetables
  • wholemeal bread

Fibers promote digestion and decrease the chances of constipation.

Please follow your doctor’s recommendations and avoid the factors that can impair the result of the procedure.
