Patient Spotlight: Cindy O’Sullivan

After giving birth to her son, Cindy O'Sullivan started gaining weight and has had struggles with this problem ever since.

However, in August 2015 she decided to take care of the matter once and for all and contacted Marina Weight Loss Center for a sleeve gastrectomy.

Dr. Mona Misra performed the procedure and now Cindy feels great weighing 110 pounds less.

What has been your biggest success thus far?

Before undergoing the surgery I used to try a lot of diets. I managed to lose weight in the past with the help of those diets but every time I would end up gaining back all the pounds I tried so hard to lose. Being able to lose weight and also keep it off after the sleeve gastrectomy has therefore been my biggest success so far.

What has been your biggest challenge?

I think that the biggest challenge I've been facing since the surgery is acknowledging my progress and being happy with it. I still see the fat me when I look in the mirror and this makes it difficult for me to realize how much weight I've lost in the past years and how my life has changed for the better. I no longer have problems with not being able to tie my own shoes or to go for a walk without feeling exhausted after the first 10 meters but I am still working on accommodating to the new me.

What is your motivation for continued change?

The way the procedure performed by Dr. Misra has improved my overall health is what keeps me motivated to continuously work on developing a healthy lifestyle. Before the surgery, I was suffering from high blood pressure. I used to take more than 5 pills a day and, as a consequence, my liver would also be affected. Now I no longer need so many medications and I am very happy to say that my last medical tests have had great results.

What is your favorite quick, go-to healthy meal?

When it comes to quick healthy meals, I can say that I've learned to rely on such meals since I'm always on the run. I actually have two favorites I'd like to share with you. The first is a mix of Greek yogurt and frozen berries that I usually eat for breakfast and sometimes also a snack. The second consists of baked salmon with teriyaki stir-fry vegetables. I like to have this for dinner and most of the time I cook extra and store it in the fridge in glass containers which I take with me to work for lunch. 

What advice would you give to those considering weight loss surgery?

For the people out there considering weight loss surgery I have one very important advice: only listen to yourself and your body's needs. Having this kind of surgery is a big step in someone's life and inevitably your friends and family will have an opinion on the matter, be it supportive or not. Deciding to undergo such a procedure is a big commitment to yourself, your motivation and your beliefs. You are the only one who knows the real reasons for considering weight loss surgery and although you have experienced failed attempts to lose weight in the past, you need to know that this time you can succeed if you stay motivated and embrace the help and the pieces of advice given by the doctors and staff at Marina Weight Loss Center. Try keeping a journal to document your journey, writing down your progress might be helpful in staying focused on achieving your goal.
